A Brief Introduction of Qum's Islamic Seminary
Since long time the holy city of Qum is considered as the scientific and cultural centre of the Shi'ites in the world. The great marajah (jurisprudents) and Ulama regularly conduct classes at the advanced levels in different Islamic sciences in this holy city attended by thousands of Ulama and students of Islamic seminaries (tullab). They also carry out extensive research in various Islamic fields and many active Islamic seminaries have been functioning in this holy city.
The advancement of learning in this holy city was prophesied by the Holy Imams (A.S.) and in this regard Imam Jafar Sadiq (A.S) has said : " There will come a period when knowledge and wisdom will spread in the east and west of the world from Qum in a way that Qum will become a proof and example over all other cities and everybody on the earth will gain knowledge being spread from Qum and that will be the period of the advent and reappearance of the Proof of Allah and Qaim (Upholder) of our rights [Hadrat Imam Mahdi (A.S.)]
(Bihaar al-Anwar, vol. 60, p. 213)
The scientific and religious activities commenced in the second century hijrah when the Ashari tribesmen settled in the city. The famous jurisprudent and traditionist(muhaddith), Abdullah bin Saad Ashari laid the foundations of Islamic learning in the city and great Ulama of the city like Ibrahim bin Hashim Qummi "Ibn Babwaih" and Zakariya bin Adam and Ahmad bin Ishaq Qummi (R.A.) and other companions of the Shia Imams (A.S.) further advanced Islamic learning in the city. Various Islamic sciences, literature and narration of ahadith progressed in this Shi'ite centre and the ahadith narrated by the traditionists in this city were approved by the Holy Shia Imams (A.S.). The Ulama of Qum were very strict in approving the historical and ahadith narrations and those persons narrating unauthentic ahadith were reprimanded and banished from the city.
With the presence of Ayatullah Mirza Qummi (R.A.) during the Qajar period it gained prominence. During the Safavid era the great philosopher and traditionist Mulla Sadra Shirazi, who founded the transcendental philosophy settled in "Kahakh" near Qum. The great philosopher and gnostic Fayd Kashani (R.A.) also settled in Qum and established the famous Faiziyah Islamic seminary near the holy shrine of Hadrat Fatima Masoumah (A.S.).
During the last phases of the Qajar period and the beginning of the Pahlavi rule, the holy city of Najaf became the prominent Islamic seminary in the Shi'ite world but with the migration of the leading jurisprudent late Ayatullah al-Uzma Haj Shaykh Abdul Karim Haeri Yazdi (R.A.) to Qum in the year 1300 solar hijrah, the Islamic seminary in Qum once again progressed with the establishment of advanced courses in Islamic sciences.
Dar al-Shifa Islamic seminary was established beside the Madrasa Faiziyah. After the demise of late Haj Shaykh Abdul Karim Haeri Yazdi (R.A.), late Ayatullah Sayyid Muhammad Taqi Khansari (R.A.) and late Ayatullah Sadr (R.A.) played an important role in the further advancement of the Islamic seminary in Qum. In the year 1322 solar hijrah Hadrat Ayatullah al-Uzma Haj Agha Husayn Tabatabai Burujerdi settled in Qum and started delivering lectures in the Islamic seminaries in the advanced courses which attracted a large number of tullab to his classes. With the death of late Ayatullah al-Uzma Haj Sayyid Abul Hasan Isfahani (R.A.) in the holy city of Najaf (Iraq), Ayatullah al-Uzma Burujerdi emerged as the leading Marja Taqleed of the Shi'ites in the world. During the stay of Ayatullah al-Uzma Burujerdi in Qum the Islamic seminary achieved its unique position and progress.
After the death of Ayatullah al-Uzma Burujerdi, the Pahlavi regime implemented its schemes to weaken the Islamic seminary in Qum. Imam Khomeini (R.A.) during this crucial period stood up against the Pahlavi regime. The Ulama and the people of Qum under the leadership of Imam Khomeini (R.A.) staged a historical uprising against the dictatorial Pahlavi regime in the month of June 1963. This uprising was brutally suppressed by the military and Imam Khomeini (R.A.) was exiled from Iran. But great jurisprudents like Ayatullah al-Uzma Gulpaigani (R.A.) and Ayatullah al-Uzma Araki, who were present in Qum guided the Islamic seminary.
The Islamic revolution in Iran achieved remarkable victory in the year 1979 under the leadership of Imam Khomeini (R.A.) but the Baathist regime in Iraq led by Saddam imposed a war against Islamic Republic of Iran and heavily suppressed all the activities of the Islamic seminaries in the holy city of Najaf (Iraq). Thousands of leading Ulama and Tullab were massacred in Najaf by Saddam's regime and many others fled from Najaf and took refuge in the holy city of Qum which has now emerged as the greatest centre of Islamic learning in the world. At present more than 60,000 Ulama including the leading Marajah Taqleed are residing in this holy city. The great Marajah and Ulama has transformed the Islamic seminary in Qum by strengthening the specialized fields in Islamic sciences. Many research centres in Islamic sciences have been established recently in the holy city of Qum and at present more than 50 different Islamic seminaries are functioning in the holy city to disseminate and propagate the teachings of Islam.
Global Centre for Islamic Sciences
After the victory of Islamic revolution in Iran in 1979 thousands of tullab from all the corners of the world have come to the holy city of Qum to gain the knowledge of Islamic sciences. The Supreme Leader of Islamic Revolution Hadrat Ayatullah al-Uzma Sayyid Ali Khamenei has founded the Global Centre for Islamic Sciences in the holy city of Qum to coordinate the educational activities of the non-Iranian tullab. At present more than 10,000 non-Iranian tullab from 90 countries are studying in the Islamic seminaries in this holy city.
Jamia Az-Zahra (A.S.) [Az-Zahra (A.S.) Islamic University]
After the victory of the glorious Islamic revolution in Iran many Islamic seminaries have been established exclusively for women in the holy city of Qum. At present more than 15000 women are studying in different Islamic seminaries founded in Qum exclusively for women.
Beside many Islamic seminaries many leading Islamic research institutions and centres are working in the holy city of Qum. All these Islamic research centres in Qum have been established after the victory of the Islamic revolution and are carrying out intensive and advanced research in all the specialized fields of Islamic sciences under the guidance of the Paramount Leader of Islamic Revolution Hadrat Ayatullah al-Uzma Sayyid Ali Khamenei.

Imam Khomeini Education and Research Institute
The start of the Imam Khomeini Education and Research Institute began in 1974 with the establishment of the Department of Education in the Dar Rahe Haq (On the Right Path) Institute.
The activities of the Dar Rahe Haq Institute started with providing cultural and educational services to youth and confronting anti-Islamic propagation (especially that of Christianity and Marxism).
It then continued with the training of young scholars and educating researchers in the various fields of Human Science. The execution of these programs had bright results. Imam Khomeini (may he rest in peace), with his support and recommendations for the continuation and development of the Institute's educational activities, covered the expenses.
After Imam Khomeini's passing, his unsparing support continued with his pious successor, Ayatullah Khamenei. Then the Institute was established in 1995 with his material and intellectual help and supervision.

The Computer Research Centre of Islamic Sciences
The Computer Research Center of Islamic Sciences (CRCIS) that was established in 1989, is responsible for promoting the Islamic culture through the use of modern technology.
The members of the board of Directors of CRCIS and also the Scientific Committee are responsible for compiling the general policies and supervising the plans and programs of the center.
The managing director with the assistance of the directors of the Research Department, Administration & Finance Department, Information Technology Department, the Noor Computer Training Institute (NCTI), and the Noor Trading Company (NTC), are in charge of planning and managing the Centre. The technical staff of the CRCIS - consisting of the erudite Islamic seminary students - is the best support for continuation of this great cultural move.

The Programs
Since the supreme mission of CRCIS is serving the Islamic culture in its various fields, its fundamental activities are to produce software for the Islamic sciences. These software which cover a wide range of Islamic texts and sciences are organized in four categories as Word Index, Subject Index, Rijal (Narrators) Index and History Index.

The Word Index
Research on the holy verses, Hadith, and scientific texts, is based on the search of their words, interpretations, and their semantic and applied classification.
The Word Index helps the researchers to procure the necessary in formation with speed and precision.
In addition, words with the same root may be studied, various relationships between words may be discovered, and these findings may be incorporated into the scientific application cycle.
Concerning the words of the Glorious Qur'an and other Arabic texts, the signs indicating the vowels are to be added to the words of these indexes in future. The Word Index is the result of dedicated efforts and covers the following stages:
Examining the usage of source. Design and applying special characters in the source text to achieve the highest level of retrieval. Typing and correction of texts. Format correction. List correction. Programming, tentative presentation, and debugging.
The complete set of CRCIS word index includes more than 500 volumes of scientific sources.
Some of the most important of these sources are as follows: the Glorious Qur'an, the al-Mizan exegesis. Ibn Abi al-Hadid's Commentary on Nahj al-Balaghah, Bihar al-Anwar along with 164 titles of its sources, the four standard books of al-Kafi, al-Tahdhib, al-Istibsar, and Man la Yahduruhu al-Faqih, Wasa'il al-Shi'ah, Mustadrak al-Wasa'il, Collection of Shaykh Mufid's works, Collection of Shaykh Saduq's works, Collection of Ibn Tawus's works, Collection of Ibn Shahr-Ashub's works, al-Dhari'ah, al-Wafi, Collections of Mulla-Sadra's works, Seminary Text Books, and other philosophical ('aqli) books, plus dictionaries and lexicons, biographies, bibliographies, commentaries, etc.

The Subject Index
Since the main foundation of research is based on the investigation of texts on particular subject, the use of a word index responds only to a part of the researcher's need. Because, many of the research outcomes are extracted from the whole text passage (not a particular word). On the other hand, the available range of a word index consisting of all the text, sometimes results in too many unrelated answers. In addition, the researcher often does not know the word he or she needs to search for the desired subject. Also, the benefits of word index without a complementary subject index is incomplete, especially when a researcher wants to find related verses and narrations to a particular subject and become informed about various views regarding that subject.
Applying uniforms and tree branch techniques, doubles the capabilities of the Subject Index, while the text of the book that is being worked on, is also always accessible. To prepare the Word Index, a considerable amount of effort is invested through the following phases: subject categorization and control, finding entries of each subject, uniform control, typing and correction, coordinating uniforms and subjects, programming, test presentation, and debugging.
Obviously, the vastness of the legacy of the Ahl al-Bayt ('a) and the richness of our scientific inheritance, creates the grounds for new and growing harvests. Therefore, it is natural that the subject indexes are always reconsidered so that they may be perfected and transformed.
CRCIS presentable 'Subject Indexes' according to 'Topics' and 'Book Titles' are as follows:
1. Fiqh & Usul: Sharh al-Lum'ah, al-Makasib, al-'Urwah al-Wuthqa, Riyad al-Masa'il, Mustamasak al-'Urwat al-Wuthqa, Fara'id al-Usul (al-Rasa'il), Kifayah al-Usul.
2. Philosophy: al-Asfar, Nihayah al-Hikmah, Badayah al-Hikmah, Sharh al-Isharat (philosophy section), Usul-e Falsafah wa Rawesh-e Ri'alism (The principles of Philosophy and the Method of Realism), Amuzesh-e Falsafah (Philosophy Instruction), al-Masha'ir, al-Hikmah al-'Arshiyyah, Sharh al-Manzumah (philosophy section), Ilahiyyat al-Shifa', and Collection of Mulla-Sardra's Works.
3. Logic: Asas al-Iqtibas, al-Jawhar al-Nadid, Sharh al-Manzumah (logic section), al-Lama'at al-Mashriyyah, Mantiq al-Mashriqiyyin, Burhan al-Shifa', and Sharh al-Isharat (logic section).
4. Hadith: Wasa'il al-Shi'ah.
The following is the list of more subject index that will be presented in the future:
1. Hadith: Bihar al-Anwar.
2. Theology: Kashf al-Murad.
3. Exegesis of the Holy Qur'an: al-Tibyan by Shaykh Tusi.
4. The collection of Shaykh Mufid's works on history, theology, and fiqh:
The Rijal (Narrators) Index
Supplying the computer with the chain of the Hadith Narrators allows us to create the Rijal Index and to produce valuable information on the following areas:
The teachers (sources) and the students of the Hadith narrators, the era and classes of the narrators, the number of ahadith of a particular narrator, the relationship of narrators with each other, as well as with the Infallible Imam ('a) etc.
The collection of this information plays an important part in discovering the tampering with and damage that many have occurred in the chain of the Hadith Narrators, determining its weakness and strength, etc.
Adding a brief biography of the narrator will make the Rijal Index more beneficial.
Producing a Rijal Index is possible through the following phases:
Using genuine transcript and-if necessary-transcript correction, reducing difficult or complicated chains of narrators to simplified ones, expert formatting, typing and correction, programming, tentative presentation of the programs, and final correction.
Including the 'Synonym System' and the 'Mushkilat al-Asnad Index' (Index pertaining to the difficulties in the chain of the narrators) enhance the efficiency of the Rijal Index. The Synonym System however, provides all the titles of a narrator. The Mushkilat al-Asnad explains the chain of the narrators including 'Tahwil' (existence of two or more chains within the same chain), 'Ta ahq' (omission of a part of the chain according to other related chains).
The following is the CRCIS Rijal indexes:
1. Chain of the Hadith Narrators in al-Kutub al-Arba'ah.
2. Chain of the Hadith Narrators in Shaykh Saduq's Books.
3. The Eight important Rijal Books.

History Index
The historical texts contain considerable amount of information. Since this information is irregularly scattered and hence, hardly accessible, this program is developed to offer more than 50 lists of the necessary research entries in this, to facilitate the task for the researchers.
Some of these lists are as follows:
-Qur'anic Verses, Ahadith and Sermons, Letters, Treaties, Wills and Testaments, Names of the Narrators, Authors, Fuqaha', Poets, Rulers, Tribal Chiefs, Books, Places, Conquests, Wars, Tribes, Statistics, Biographies, Occupations, Births and Deaths, Calendars and Dates, etc, as well as concepts such as Cultural, Theological, Ethical, Political, Economic, Geographical, and Military Concepts, Concepts regarding the family and the civil rights.

The Qur'anic Index of Noor al-Anwar
This index is prepared to offer all necessary information for the researchers about the Glorious Qur'an, featuring a relatively small volume which makes the researcher independent of referring to various other references in many cases.
This index contains the desired key information and among them the following may be referred to:
- Differences in Recitation, Occasions of Revelation of Verses, Interpreting Hadith, Verses having the same content, Verses applicable to each other;
Lists such as the list of Proper Nouns, Revelation Sequence, Particular Qur'anic Concepts, etc.

The Common Features of the Programs
The CRCIS computer specialists employ advanced methods such as the ones below, in producing Islamic sciences soft wares:
Compacting Voluminous Information:
Using this method, the volume of the files of the Word Index has been reduced considerably. For instance, the 110 volumes of Bihar al-Anwar -including its index files - takes only 29 M.B. of memory.
High Speed in Search and Information Retrieval:
The specialists of CRCIS have been able to increase the information retrieval speed of fully compact files greatly by applying new innovations, so that finding a word in the 110 volume Bihar al-Anwar takes only a few moments.
Profiting from New Technology:
The CRCIS Treasury of Islamic Sciences' on CD-ROM profits from the latest technology. For instance, the Word Index of the Glorious Qur'an and the al-Mizan Exegesis, Ibn Abi al-Hadid's Commentary on Nahj al-Balaghah, al-Kutub al-Arba'ah, Bihar al-Anwar, Wasa'il al-Shi'ah, and Mustadrak Wasa'il al-Shi'ah containing 225 volumes, have been fitted on 76 M.B. of memory space that is equal to 1/9 of the total space of a CD-ROM.
Object-Oriented Programming
Computer Services and other Activities of CRCIS:
Since the ultimate goal of these efforts is rendering adequate services to the researchers and the elite, the centre also provides various other necessary scientific services besides producing Islamic sciences soft wares.
The following is a brief profile of these services:

Information Technology (IT):
The IT services of the Centre may be considered in three different areas:
Establishing IT Banks:
The seminary students and other researchers of Islamic sciences profit from the available programs free of charge daily, and if they encounter an ambiguity or a problem during a research session, they enjoy the assistance and guidance of the experts of the Centre who are around to help them.

A reputable section of the Centre is its training department called the Noor Computer Training Institute (NCTI).
This institute endeavors hard to train the enthusiasts of computer sciences covering different age and educational background groups.
Most of the instructors of this institute are among the seminary students and scholars, and the training is rendered free of charge to the seminary student. Non-seminary students also may enjoy the training services of NCTI by paying an affordable tuition.

C) Providing Computer Facilities:
An active department of the centre is the Noor Trading Company (NTC) consisting of two units:
1. Shabakeh Computer Shop (SCS) :
2. This is NTC's Sales unit, the SCS endeavors to provide computer systems and peripherals to all the enthusiasts. Its prompt services and open attitude is welcomed by the people.
The SCS also equips the research institutes affiliated with the seminary with computers and peripherals, and it helps them in using their systems as well.
All the CRCIS Programs are produced under the name of 'Noor Software' [Noor=light, illumination], and they are presented to those interested in Islamic sciences, so that it may illuminate their path.
3. Hardware Services Unit (HSU):
The HSU employs highly capable engineers, and it is responsible for support, installation, repair, and running computer systems. This unit renders very essential hardware services to the Islamic sciences researchers and specially to the research institutes and foundations. Also, it has taken a most fundamental step by executing 'the Common Hardware Plan' that includes supporting hardware and providing repair and maintenance services to the seminary personal and institutional computer systems.

Other Activities of CRCIS:
It is obvious that dynamism of a centre such as ours, is only guaranteed when it could have a deserving and logical bond with the scientific community.
Having this purpose in mind, CRCIS follows up its endeavors abroad and wherever there is a trace of a computer system associated with the Islamic sciences field continually, both in the university and seminary communities.
In this way, while gaining knowledge of other experts' experiences, the centre may present them its products as the fruits of many years of hard work. Some of these activities are as follows:
The Computer & the Islamic Sciences Biannual Seminars:
The first of these seminars was held in 1992 and the second in 1994. The main objective of holding these seminars is to introduce the role of information technology in the growth of Islamic sciences research, and also to bring together the two institutions of university and seminary, so that the grounds for benefiting from the new technology is made possible in this field more then ever. The multiplicity of computer centres in the Islamic sciences fields, doubles the possibility of repeated or parallel works.
Fortunately, the first two seminars have played an undeniable part in bringing together different viewpoints and preventing repetitious works.
Creating the grounds for the formation of 'the High in formation Council of the Islamic Sciences' (HICS), is one of the centre's invaluable achievements. The HICS is responsible for planning this vital and important field and submitting the proposals to the supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The Computer & the Islamic Sciences Biannual Seminars have clearly proved itself in the charts of scientific and specialized seminars. It takes a fresh viewpoint to the essential issues of communication, technology, and theological research.
The National Islamic Sciences Software Biannual Exhibition:
Many related research centres, as well as CRCIS itself, participate in this national event and they offer software programs at affordable prices.
The first and second of these exhibitions were held in 1993, and 1995, respectively.
The Qum Seminary Management System Project:
This project was started on the instructions of the supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ayatullah Sayyid 'Ali Khamene'i, by a group of CRCIS specialists in order to prepare a suitable system for that organization. To do so, after the initial studies and examinations of the project, reconsideration of the present system started through cooperation of the personnel and authorities of the Qum Seminary Management Centre. This cooperation will continue until the Seminary - including all of its school across the country - is provided with all the necessary services of the centre.
Design, development execution of the following systems are the results of the efforts in this regard:
* The National Centralized Admission (system for the freshman seminary students)
* The Admission System (for non-freshman seminary students)
* The Cortex Data Entry System
* Periodical Examination System

The Center for the Great Islamic Encyclopedia
Islamic culture and civilization is undoubtedly one of the most radiant civilizations of mankind and numerous races have had a share in its establishment. But there is no doubt that the most important and the largest group responsible for its establishment have cropped up from Iran. A land that itself possesses a great culture tradition and in the Islamic era, because of this very tradition it was transformed into the biggest showcase of the civilization of Islam and the culture of humanity. The knowledge of all the aspects of this great civilization that was known for centuries to the world of middle ages and is today the subject of studies in various fields of university education, is however a difficult task, albeit not impossible. With regard to the vast geographical expanse, of its time this civilization was the creator and origin of very many view points and opinions. Even a comprehensive introduction of it requires the efforts of a large group of researchers in various fields of study. For this reason, whenever the thought of complication of the works, including the various positions of Islamic culture and civilization has occurred , many scholars have entered this arena in order to undertake research of some of its latent dimensions in accordance with the modern viewpoint and scientific methods and shed new light on them. In this manner, the Great Islamic Encyclopedia Center was founded in the year 1983 with the purpose of compiling the general and specialized dissertations especially in the area of Islamic and Iranian culture and civilization. It proves this point that if the promoters, commentators and researchers of each civilization belong to that same culture and civilization and make use of the right methods of research, they can certainly do a better job because they are familiar with the body and soul of that culture.
But the realization of such an objective in the initial years of the establishment of the Great Islamic Encyclopedia Center was not easily attainable for some of the experts and they came to the conclusion that as yet the origins of much of the research on Islam and Iran was in the hands of the European researchers. In fact, until quite recently , the only relatively comprehensive and well- researched source concerning the various positions of Islamic culture and civilization was an encyclopedia that was written by a number of western scholars and a few whose second edition is also now in the process of completion. Despite this, with reliance on the cultural backing and scientific capabilities of the Iranian researchers and scholars, the Great Islamic Encyclopedia Center began its work. After years of effort, it brought out its first volumes, all the eastern and western critics confessed to the scientific capabilities of the Iranian researchers and the encyclopedia quickly established itself as a great and documented and accurate source in the world of Islamic and Iranian research. Gradually, it was transformed into one of the largest centers of research in the field of Islamic culture and civilization. The scientific organization of the Great Islamic Encyclopedia and also the tools and equipment of research in it, are worthy of consideration at the global level. At present, in this center, about two-hundred researchers and teachers are employed on a continual basis. The specialized library with approximately four- hundred thousand volumes of printed and hand-written books, films, an assorted number of political charters and documents and more than two thousand titles of scientific magazines, both local and foreign, assist the researchers in the job of research and compilation. This organization is composed of a higher academic council and numerous academic departments. Each department has a head, assistant and some affiliated and associate members. The head of the departments are considered to be among the best and most accredited teachers of the country. The academic departments of the center consist of the following:
The department of Arabic literature; the department of Persian literature; the department of religions and mysticism; the department of geography; the department of science; the department of religious law, Qur’anic sciences and narrative; the department of philosophy; the department of oratory and sects; the department of sociology; the department of art and architecture and the department of Iranian studies. The higher academic council that has the responsibility of determining the academic policies of the center is also composed of heads of academic departments and advisors who hold one session of meeting monthly in which the academic issues are reviewed, proposals are approved or rejected and opinions are presented.
It is necessary to point out that in this center at present there are three encyclopedias in the process of compilation: the Great Islamic Encyclopedia of which ten volumes have been published so far; the Encyclopedia of Islamic Religious Law and the Great Iran Encyclopedia, whose articles are in the process of research and compilation, and each of them consist of various sections with independent managers.
The method of research and compilation in the Great Islamic Encyclopedia Center is based on a specific method and is to some extent innovative. It can be said that in the field of group activity it has been extremely successful. This method can be summarized in the implementation of a stage that encompasses all the academic activities for the compilation and composition of the encyclopedia. These stages follow:

1. - Selection of headings
For this task, a special department named “department of selection of titles” exists. The researchers of this department, by referring to firsthand sources, dictionaries, encyclopedias, outstanding books and historical references besides other sources, note down on special sheets of paper, that which evidently can be taken up for research as a source for an encyclopedia and reveal the source or sources of it also right there. With regard to the subject of the title or heading, they write on it the specific code of the relevant department. Then each one of these sheets is placed in alphabetical order in its respective place and is sent at periodic intervals to the office of the academic departments. The head of each department with the help of the assistant departments and with consultation with members of the department and on his academic judgment, reviews these headings. It is possible that some will be eliminated; some others with regard to their subject are sent to other departments, new headings are added to them and or he may propose that it is necessary that several academic departments cooperate with one another in the collection of an article. Then the sheets of headings of each department are returned after these appraisals and presentation of proposals once again to the department for selection of titles and once again they are investigated, reviewed and their measure determined by a special commissions. Each one of the meeting of the special commissions is devoted to the review of the headings of one of the academic departments and the head or the assistant and the representative of the head of the relevant department is also present in this commission. The duty of the commission with the presence of the head or the representative of the academic department is to review the heading and in the process of this review it is possible that a heading is eliminated or returned and or other titles are added to the list of the headings of the department and the approximately quality of an article that is written under any title determined in this same commission. The approved heading is the final list of the titles of the encyclopedia that are registered in the headings office and are communicated to the relevant departments and entered in the computer of the center.

2. Creation of an academic file
A special department in the Encyclopedia Center is responsible for the creation of an academic file meaning identification and gathering of source of research and compilation of headings. Every heading, after its final approval, is communicated to this department and the researchers of the files department under the supervision of the head of the department. With regard to the academic code of the heading that shows what topics it includes and pertains to which academic department, they undertake to create an academic file about that heading. For this purpose it strives to obtain important and reliable sources including eastern or western sources, books, magazines, manuscripts and computerized data and digitalized books. An image form is created to prepare an academic file that at least for the commencement of the research, can be considered to be a good help for the researchers. The researchers of this department are likely to consult with the heads of departments and also other researchers for the creation of a file. In any case, each file, after its creation, is given by the head of the department for completion to a senior researcher and after its completion is sent back to the relevant department.

3. Research and compilation
One of the duties of the academic departments of the Great Islamic Encyclopedia Center is identifying and absorbing researchers and distinguished writers in Iran and abroad. The head of each department with regard to the approved opening and the academic files that enter the relevant departments, appoints distinguished writers as candidates for compilation of each article. Every topic is sent by means of a note that includes the name of the heading, the length of the article, and date of delivery together with its academic file to the writer under consideration. The writers and researchers of the departments are composed of a small number of associate members and a larger number of affiliated members who are free to make use of all the facilities of the center for the purpose of research. In the process, they can freely consult with the heads of departments and the rest of researchers.

4. Each article after compilation
Each article is delivered to the editor in chief and from there after registration is sent to the department of selection of heading so that the article is reviewed and approved from the point of view of accuracy of heading and or turning over the heading of an article to other headings of the encyclopedia.

5. Department of control of articless
Each article, after having been reviewed by the selection of heading, is returned to the office of the editor in chief and from there with a special note of the editorial is sent to one of the members of the department of control so that article is evaluated from the point of view of accuracy of transference and documentations. In this department, each bit of information that the writer has presented in the article and has originated from a source is compared with the source or sources of reference and documentation and a report is prepared. This report is sent back along with the article and the academic file and then the aforesaid report is read thoroughly amended and completion of the information presented or documentation of the article is carried out.

6. Academic edition
An article that has been reviewed in this manner, together with the control report and amendments of the writer or his replies to the control report, are all delivered to the relevant academic department. In this stage the head of the department or his assistant carry out the evaluation and academic editing of the article. It is possible that in this stage, an article in the opinion of the department head is not of an acceptable academic level and is rejected. At this instance, the head of the departments sends the article for repeat compilation to the original writer or any other writer that he considers to be necessary. In general, an article that from the point of view of structure and compilation of subject and fluency is approved by the head of the department enters the stage of academic editing. Here the editor reviews the control report meticulously and in fact carries out a sort of refereeing regarding the article and parallel to it, polishes the article from the academic point of view. It is possible that the editor at this stage discusses and exchanges views with the writer about the subject or the subjects that have been mentioned in the article so that the ambiguities are eliminated or the source and documents finalized. After the academic editing, the typed article is read and duly attested by the writer and at that point the head of the department also signs and gives his approval and the article is ready to enter the next stage.

7. Final Editing
In this department: all articles of the encyclopedia from every academic department go through several reviews. In other words, every article in the department of final editing from the point of view of validity of the topics taken from the sources, and the length of the article are analyzed and are edited technically from the viewpoint of speech and language and calligraphy. After the completion of the final stage of polishing and editing, the article is sent for final typesetting. Meticulous re-reading of the typeset text and care of the form and meaning of the articles and supervision over the printing of the encyclopedia are among the other duties of this department.
The chief editor of the encyclopedia continuously supervises all the above mentioned stages from selection of titles to final editing and the printing of the work. At each one of these stages, the article goes to the office of the editorial head and the next stage, after the registration in the office and computer of the editorial chief, with a note of the chief editor it enters the next stage. The obligation of the researchers and the encyclopedia center to carry out these stages, eliminates some of the likely problems of team work such as difference of taste and has shown that these differences despite the existence of an organized and tested method is solvable and tolerable and these same differences of opinions can even be the cause of change and improvement.
This method of working as well as the positive results that have been obtained from it has undoubtedly left behind an important effect on the process of Iranian and Islamic research. In addition that the Great Islamic Encyclopedia Center, by adopting these techniques, has laid the foundation of a new tradition in the writing of encyclopedia in Iran. It has also facilitated the achievement of result of many university researches and has played an important and effective role especially in the area of compilation of the university. At the present, the subject of many of the post-graduate and doctoral thesis in the field of human sciences have been inspired by the heading and titles of this encyclopedia, that for the first time, has been put forward in a scientific and documented manner. By being in possession of a superior level of research and also availability of sources of research, has introduced new methods and thinking for the researchers. In addition, the emphasis of this center, on employing young researchers in various departments and the advice to the distinguished teachers, has by itself had a great impact in the establishment of a class of young researchers’ knowledge in Iranian and Islamic history and culture. It needs to be mentioned that the big result of it is gradually beginning to appear now. In this respect it can be said that the Great Islamic Encyclopedia Center in these years, in the role of a university, has trained researchers that from the academic and research view point are placed at the best of levels. Just as has been pointed out, it strives to arrange for the tools and implements of research in the best form and place them at the disposal of the researchers. Nowadays, even in the field of human sciences research, computers are extremely efficient and useful. Provided that there is sufficient information available of their services, a lot of time can be saved. The Great Islamic Encyclopedia Center, with emphasis on this point and the special bias it has for state of the art technology in order to speed up the realization of its objectives, has endeavored to encourage its researchers to make use of computers and various kinds of software for research work. For this task, it has initiated long term plans and in this respect it is regarded to be among one of the pioneering centers in the Iran.
From the beginning of the year 2000, this center, with the establishment of the “information council,” entered a new phase of its existence in the field of utilization of information technology in an earnest manner. The activity of the center towards utilization of computerized information technology is summarized in three parts as follows:
The first part is computerized and, in general, is considered to be among the essential requirement of a research center. The computerized library in comparison with the ordinary book library and possesses numerous features and advantages. The possibility of computerized browsing in this section is attractive for the researcher so that he can drive the maximum benefit from the use of this library.
The computerized library is composed of three main sections of which the fist one is the ‘CD bank’ consisting of compact discs that place a considerable amount of the required sources and data at the disposal of the researchers. The second section is the archive of the computerized library that is composed of a collection of the files of the library that is arranged and collected from the internet and or other sources and a copy of it is saved in the archive file on the computer memory. To give an approximate statistical data, the archive file at present incorporates something like about four- thousand titles of books, and steps have been taken for increasing its data base. The specialists of the center are presently busy with the planning of a program by means of which one can search the archive file in a centralized library that is an archive of the various links with the internet network and books that are placed online over the network. By making use of the internet facilities we can have access to this library.
The second part of the informative activities of the center is the exchange of information. The interface of the Great Islamic Encyclopedia Center, with other recognized research and academic centers of Iran and the world, allows researchers of the center to communicate with other researchers that are engaged in research work and are active in similar fields in the various cities and countries of the world. They obtain information of the latest publications and reviews that are performed on the various books. Generally, gaining information of every point can be important for a researcher which necessitates that action be taken towards development of the use of the internet and exchange of information. One of the main objectives of this development can be the extension of the activity of the center of information over the internet.
Presently, researchers in any place in the world can obtain information by communicating with the web site of the center. We hope that in the future, the important texts of it are also placed at the disposal of the researchers.
The local area network or “LAN” of the center, with regard to it having eighty knots, each of which connects and relates a department or academic division with one another, is an important network that is present in possession of a high technical capabilities.
The third part of the informative activity of the center pertains to the matter of functional software. The search, maintenance and editing of information, its organization for subsequent editing and some secondary services such as translation are among the services of this software that facilitate individuals in using their time in matters that can be economized upon as well as help them to make the maximum use of their concentration in their creativity and scientific productivity. Besides the implementation of the general stages of research and collection and compilation of the encyclopedia, it is possible that each one of the academic departments adopt specific methods of selection and primary evaluation of their respective headings and the form of research and presentation of the subject. But all of them agree to this definition that any responsible academic activity at the global level must be undertaken in an impartial manner and be detached from baseless sentiments and prejudices. It needs to be mentioned that the observance of these very points have sometimes resulted in the criticism by those persons that hold the opinion that history and culture must not be viewed from a neutral standpoint. But as it is the job of every one of these to give accurate and at the same time concise information that will assist the reader in his belief and adoption of a stance in relation to events and issues that have been put forward, it cannot look at issues with a prejudiced view. This is the case especially as the objective of this thesis is to benefit all the sects and races in Islamic nations and to transform them into a documentary source and basis throughout the world of Islam. About the conciseness of the proposed subjects, it must be emphasized that the style of expression and presentation of the subject itself requires a special technique and method and is an art that is realized only as a result of application, experience and total and sufficient command over the subject. It is obvious that conciseness is in accordance with scientific and technical standards. It shall enable the reader to avoid having o refer to tens or rather hundreds of different books, and this is one of the very objectives of the Great Islamic Encyclopedia.
The Great Islamic Encyclopedia Center regards the safeguarding of the heritage of the ancestors and the national culture of Iran to be its biggest duty, and the compilation of various thesis is an affirmation of this very duty. But alongside this, it has launched an extensive search for the collection of the written works on the culture of Iran and has acquired invaluable handwritten manuscript in this center whose list has been published and placed at the disposal of researchers.
The Great Islamic Encyclopedia Center maintains the oldest and most complete copy of the Shahnameh (The Book of Kings) of the poet Abol Qasem Ferdowsi in its treasury of hand-written books. This exquisite copy was written in the seventh century A.H. and along with illustration and calligraphy also has the five disciplines in a complete form in its margins. This one-thousand paged Shahnameh” (Book of Kings” has been placed at the disposal of the general public in limited distribution in the form of facsimile copies with two types of covers. The sales department of the Great Islamic Encyclopedia Center is charged with the duty of arranging for the appropriate and extensive distribution of the publications of the center both inside and outside the country. This department, in addition to participating in all the book fairs at the provincial, country–wide and international levels, has installed an orderly service for the issuance of special membership cards and sending books by post to the address of the subscribers. The department has also taken into consideration special discounts for professors and university students and the lecturers and clerics of the seminaries as well as for teachers and cultural strata of the society. By contacting this department located in the premises of the center, they can avail themselves of these facilities.
Of the collection of the Great Islamic Encyclopedia, so far ten volumes have been published as follows:
First volume: (Aab, Aale Davoud) 1989
Second volume: (Al- Rashid, Ibne Azraq)1990
Third volume: (Ibne Azraq, Ibne Sirin) 1990
Fourth volume: (Ibne Sina, Ibne Maisar) 1991
Fifth volume: (Ibn Maimoon, Abol azQalqnsi)1991
Sixth volume: (AbuAzzeh, Ahmadbin Alavieh, Uzbek Khan)1996
Eighth volume: (Uzbekistan, Ashbilieh)1998
Ninth volume: (Ashtab, Albireh) 2000
Tenth volume: (Albairi, BabaTaher) 2001
Likewise, with regard to the subject of this encyclopedia and for purpose of increasing the readership and their audiences, it has been decided that simultaneous with the publication of the volumes in Farsi, the Arabic translation shall also be published. For this task, a special academic group has been established at the center and outstanding translators and researchers have resorted to the task of translation of the encyclopedia. So far, four volumes of the Arabic translation of this encyclopedia entitled “Great Islamic Encyclopedia” (Dairatul Ma’aref al-Islamiat al-Kubra) has been published as follows:
First volume: (Aab-Aaeen Alimshahi)1411A.H/1991
Second volume: (A-Ibne Khurasan)1416A.H/1995
Third volume: (Ibne Al-Khurasani-Ibnekasir)1418A.H./1997
Fourth volume: (Ibne Kasir-Abu Talib) 1420A.H/1999
After the publication of a few volumes of the Great Islamic Encyclopedia, in accordance with the proposal of the chief editor and the approval of the higher academic council, the compilation of others thesises such as the “Great Encyclopedia of Iran,” which is a universal and national thesis as well as the thesis of religious laws were commenced. Each one of these is in possession of an independent academic organization that is actively engaged in this center and is under the supervision of the chief editor and the higher academic council.

Introduction to the Nahj al-Balaghah Foundation
The Nahj al-Balaghah Foundation, as a centre for research and study of the principles of the invaluable book Nahj al- Balaghah (Highway of Eloquence), began its activities in 1976, at the proposal of 'Allamah 'Abd al-Husayn Amini (author of the monumental work al-Ghadir), with the aim of carrying out research on the narrations, history and life of Imam 'Ali ibn Abi Talib (a). In view of the society's strong necessity for Islamic culture and education, and the tendency of the young generation during that decade to get acquainted with Islamic teachings and religious sources, the Foundation began its cultural and scientific programs with the efforts of Hujjat al-lslam wal-Muslimin Dinparvar and the cooperation of personalities such as martyr Shaheed Ayatullah Murtaza Mutahhari, Shaheed Ayatullah Sayyid Muhammad Husayn Beheshti, and the late 'Allamah Muhammad Taqi Ja'fari.
However, compared to the situation in the initial years of its establishment, the activities of the Foundation considerably improved after the victory of the Islamic Revolution in 1979, and today it covers many related fields. The Foundation's scientific activities have been mainly carried out in the fields of publishing books, holding annual seminars, establishing the Nahj al-Balaghah Correspondence School, preparing the 'Alawi Encyclopaedia, founding the Nahj al-Balaghah Specialised Library, publishing thesis written by university students, and the inauguration of the Academy of Nahj al-Balaghah Sciences.

Publication of Books
The Foundation, with the cooperation of researchers and scholars of theology schools and universities, has published more than 140 book titles in connection with different issues related to the personality and characteristics of Imam 'Ali ( 'a) and Nahj al- Balaghah, in line with introducing the Imam's personality. These books are mainly in the Persian, Arabic, and Urdu languages.
1. Books in Persian that have been written and compiled by the Foundation's writers and editors.
2. Books in Arabic, including the publication of Bahj al- Sabaghah fi Sharh Nahj al-Balaghah, written by 'Allamah Shaykh Muhammad Taqi Shushtari. This book has been researched and published in fourteen volumes by the Foundation's scientific board
3. Books in English, including the translation of Imam 'Ali's ( 'a) famous epistle to his governor of Egypt, Malik Ashtar.
4. Books in Urdu, including a series of twelve books that are being taught as part of the correspondence course.
In addition, the Foundation has translated and published the Maxims of Imam 'Ali ('a) in 14 of the world's prominent languages.

Scientific Congresses
The holding of scientific and research congresses in different fields related to Nahj al-Balaghah and the personality of Imam 'AH (A.S.) are among the most important achievements of the Foundation. Up to now, fourteen congresses have been held, the first one being the World Nahj al-Balaghah Millennium Congress held in the year 1981/1401. In these congresses, domestic and foreign professors and researchers present articles and deliver speeches, introducing the teachings of Imam 'Ali ('a), the results of which, in addition to all the discussions brought up in the specialised commissions, have been compiled in a book.
It is noteworthy that at the beginning of each congress, different subjects related to Nahj al-Balaghah and Imam 'Ali's ( 'a) personality are brought up and discussed. However, from the 6th Congress onwards, a specific issue has been designated as the main topic of the congress. The congress is held each year on the 13th of Rajab, marking the auspicious birth anniversary of the Epitome of Justice and Piety, Imam 'Ali ('a). The titles and years in which these congresses were held are as follows:
1. The World Millennium Congress on Nahj al-Balaghah, 1401/1981.
2. The World Congress on Nahj al-Balaghah, 1402/1982.
3. The Congress on Nahj al-Balaghah, 1403/1983.
4. The Congress on Principles and Modes of Islamic Government in Nahj al-Balaghah, 1404/1984.

The Nahj al-Balaghah Correspondence School
Since its establishment in the year 1987, the Nahj al- Balaghah Correspondence School has up to now taught four thousand students the teachings of this unique book. In line with helping the young generation to benefit the utmost from religious and ideological teachings, this section has compiled twelve discussions, within the framework of simple and eloquent texts from Nahj al-Balaghah, for the convenience of students, researchers and all others who are interested. At the end of each course an examination is held through correspondence and a certificate is given to the students who participate. The series of discussions which have been prepared exclusively from Nahj al' Balaghah, have up to now been translated into Persian and Urdu. The topics of this series are as follows:
1. The Source of Existence (Theology- the Need for Intellectual Development)
2. The Source of Existence (A Correct Understanding of the Meaning of Existence)
3. The Source of Existence (Love and the Worship of Allah)
4. The Source of Existence (The Proper Political System)
5. Bi'that and Prophethood (The Grounds of Bi 'that)

8. Ethics and the Prophet's Sirah
9. The Need for Leadership
10. The Imamate of Imam 'Ali ('a)
11. The Day of Resurrection
12. The Social Effects of Belief in the Resurrection

The 'Alawi Encyclopaedia and Nahj al'Balaghah
The compilation of the 'Alawi Encyclopaedia is one of most valuable activities that are being carried out by Nahj al-Balaghah Foundation. It is the result of years of efforts and research in the field of collecting and compiling the narrations of the Infallible Imams (A.S.) and the sources of Nahj al-Balaghah. The compilation of these narrations, the greater part of which has been accomplished, is being continuously followed up. But, due to its wide scope, the project has not yet been finished. It is hoped that this encyclopaedia, whose narrations and topics have been classified according to the issues they deal with, would soon be placed at the disposal of all those interested, both in the form of a book and CD.

The Nahj al-Balaghah Specialised Library
This specialised library with more than four thousand book titles relating to Nahj al-Balaghah, narrations and books written about Imam 'Ali (A.S.), is considered one of the most important libraries in connection with Imam 'Ali (A.S.) and Nahj al'Balaghah. Mainly university students and all other interested persons use this library.

Publication of University Students' Theses
Another one of the Foundation's activities is giving support and guiding the university students whose theses at the end of their studies to obtain their Masters' degree were related to Nahj al- Balaghah. The Foundation has formed a scientific board, with addition, the board introduces consultants and guide professors to scientific qualities are then
published at the Foundations' expenses and put at the disposal of those interested in acquiring knowledge.

Academy of Nahj al-Balaghah Sciences
One of the basic measures being followed up by the Foundation is the establishment of an academy of Sciences as mentioned in Nahj al-Balaghah. The Foundation's officials believe that, wider and deeper research should be carried out on the eloquence and wisdom of this unique book which has unanimously been hailed as above the words of man and next only to the Revealed Word of Allah, the Holy Qur'an, so as to properly respond to the society's ideological and spiritual demands. In this direction, the proposal to establish such a faculty and accept students for Masters Degree, was presented to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatullah Sayyid 'Ali Khamene'i, who approved the project. He suggested that the Academy carry out its activities as an institution affiliated to the University of the Ahl al- Bayt World Assembly (AWA).
Thus, the preliminaries were carried out and the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology issued the required authorisation. The compilation of the books and subjects to be studied is going through the final stages and it is hoped that students will be accepted at the beginning of the next academic year. It seems that with the beginning of the Academy's activities, fundamental steps have been taken in line with broadening the scope of research about Nahj al-Balaghah. It is sincerely hoped that the Nahj al-Balaghah Foundation will succeed in reaching its main objective in introducing to the world the ideological and scientific legacy of the Commander of the Faithful and Leader of the Pious, Imam 'Ali ibn Abi Talib ( 'a).
