Tafsir Surat al- Falaq (The Daybreak)
By: Ayatullah al-Uzma Nasir Makarim Shirazi in Tafsir Namuneh
Translated from Farsi into English by: Fatima Zabeth Beenesh
Surat Al-Falaq (The Daybreak) -
This sura descended at Mecca and consists of 5 ayaat
The contents and virtues of Sura e falaq
A group of people believe that sura e Falaq descended at Mecca though another group of interpreters belief it is Madani (descended at medina).
The contents of this sura are the teachings which the merciful God taught to his messenger peace be upon him specifically to the other Muslims generally in the context of taking refuge in the pure divine entity to protect from the harms of evils doers so that to entrust himself to Merciful God. To become safe in his protection from every evil and the troubles of the evil doers.
About the occurrence of the sura e falaq (shan e nuzal) they are narrations in the most of the books of interpretations, according to them, the prophet got affected by the magic by the Jews and fell ill. Jibril alaihis salam (the archangel) descended. And showed him the well where they concealed the implements of sorcery. They take them out and then recited this sura and the prophet peace be upon him recovered back his health.
But the scholar late tabarisi and some other research scholars brought under question the documents which are related to Aaisha and Ibn Abbas. For example: Firstly, according to its reputation this sura is related to Mecca. Whereas the conflict of prophet peace be upon him with the Jews was in the city Medina. This proofs the invalidity of these narrations.
From other side if the prophet peace be upon was coming in the spell of the sorcery so easily and felling ill in the bed of ailment. It was very easy to cease him from the greater purposes. Certainly the Sovereign God who send him for the great duty of giving the divine message and he too protected the messenger of Allah so that the high status of the prophecy must become tool of their choice.
Thirdly in the case if the magic leaves the effects upon the body of prophet peace be upon him it may create thoughts in the minds of public that the magic of the magicians is effective upon his soul and this may shake and disturb the believe of the common people towards the prophet.
Hence the honourable Quran negates this matter and refused that the prophet peace be upon him got captivated by magic of the magicians and said:

And the wrongdoers say, "You follow not but a man affected by magic."

Sura e furqan 8.9
Here musโhoor may be contributes the meaning of one who is mentally or physically affected by the magic, any way it proves the fact.
The sanctity of the status of prophecy cannot be taken under the question and It cannot be relied upon these kinds of uncertain narrations in finding out the meaning of ayat.
About the virtues of reading this sura it is quoted by the prophet peace be upon him who said: The ayaat which descended upon me are not descended upon any other prophet and they are sura e Nas and sura e Falaq.
In another hadis from imam Jafar e Sadiq alaihis salam we read: The one who recites sura e Nas, Falaq and Qul huvallaho ahad in the namaz of Vitr(a one rakat namaz of midnight prayers โnamaz e tahajuudโ) it will be told to him: O the servant of Allah Glad tidings for you, the Majestic God had accepted your namaz e vitr.
Once again in a narration from prophet Muhammad peace be upon him, we read who said to one of his companions: Do you want I to teach you two of the chapters which are the best chapters in Noble Quran? He replied: yes, yes O messenger of Allah taala.
His eminence taught him Maโoozatan (That is sura e Nas and Falaq) and recited them in the morning namaz and told his companion: every time while you want to sleep and awake recite both these chapters of Nas and Falaq.
It is quite evident that these virtues are for those who whole heartedly and with high spirits believed, practiced and coordinated with the contents of those chapters.

Definition:
I take refuge to the Lord of dawn
In the first ayat commanded the person of prophet as a leader and role model and said: Say! I take refuge to the lord of dawn and day break which split the darkness of the night.
From the evils of whatever created
From the evils of every creature the miscreants, the harmful human beings, jennies, animals, accidents, the immoral occurrences and the evils of carnal desires.
The above term means to split something and to separate one thing from another. When the dawn prevails the dark veil of night splits. The meaning of this word is used for sunrise such as the term Fajr is used for the dawn.
Some believe the above term is the entire creation of all the living beings including man, animals and the plants. As the birth of these creatures takes place by a split of seed, egg and something parallel to it. Those are the strange stages of their creation. In fact at the time of birth a great transformation occurs in that creature and he enters from a different world to another dissimilar sphere.
In the ayat 92 of sura e Anโam we read: Al-An'am (The Cattle)
Certainly the mighty God split the seed and kernels. H takes out the alive from the death and the death from alive.
And some had taken the meaning of the falaq far wider than this. It is applied to every type creation and establishment. As the creation of everything splits the veil of the hidden and absent things and the light of his existence gets evident.
Each of these meaning have three dimensions (the sunrise- the birth of active creatures- the creation of every mortal) it is a marvel which is wonderful and proves the greatness of the Provider God who is the efficient and wise creator. To define the Dominant God with these descriptions have deep meaning and the contents.
In some of the narrations it is defined that falaq is a well or a prison in the hell. It is like a split in the heart of hell which displays itself.
Possibly this narration indicates that one of the truth among the truths that is not limiting the meaning of the falaq.
The meaning of above term is not that the creation of Supreme God has not any evil in itself by nature. As the creation is the same establishment and the establishment and existence is the sheer blessing. The honourable Quran says:
รรกรธรณรรถรญ รรณรรบรรณรครณ รรตรกรธรณ รรณรญรบรรฒ รรณรกรณรรณรฅรต รฆรณรรณรรณรรณ รรณรกรบรรณ รรกรบร
รถรครรณรรครถ รฃรถรค รรถรญรครฒ (32:7)
The perfect God Whatever he made he created with virtuous perfection. He began the creation of man from dust.
But the evil is created when the creatures go beyond the law of creator. And leave his prearranged path.
For example the piercing tooth and bite of the animals is a way of defence for them as they use them for their defence before the enemy. If this tool of defence is used in proper way it is blameless and noble. And if it is used improperly before the friend it is an evil.
Whereas there are many utilities we count them outwardly, evil but inwardly they are virtuous such as the accidents and the mind awakening and cautioning calamities which stimulates the man who is drowned in the sleep of ignorance and brings his attention towards the God, certainly they are not malicious.
Then in the definition and explanation of this issue it adds: From the evils of every upsetting creature, when it enters.
The above term as told by Ragib in Mufridath it means the profound darkness of the night which exists in the midnight. Hence the noble Quran while indicating the end of the phase of evening prayers (namaz e magrib) said: โฆtill the gasaq (namaz e magrib)
In some of the dictionaries gasaq means the beginning of the darkness of night it is far from the fact. Basically the root of the word means to get filled and began to flow. Certainly the darkness of the night when get filled up till brim as soon as it reaches to the mid night. One of the vital elements of its meaning is to rush and to attack. Hence it is used in this meaning too.
Therefore the meaning of the above term in the ayat under discussion is the individual who attacks or any evil person who takes advantage to attack in the darkness of night. As only the wild beasts and venomous animals come out of their nest at the late night hours and create disaster. And the immoral, polluted and devilish people mostly take advantage of the darkness of night to reach their evil purposes.
The meaning of the term above is a pit and its verb is used to enter in the pit. The mischievous people who create losses take advantage of the darkness of night. By creating the pits of mishaps they try to achieve their evil policies. Whereas this term indicates to get infused.
Then it adds: And from the troubles of those who blow on the knots.
The above term means to spit a meagre amount of saliva. Where this task starts by a blow.
Most of the interpreters define this term as the women who practice witchcraft. The above term is the plural of feminine gender reciting the chants and the mantras and blowing upon the knots. By this way they were acting out their magical tactics.
A group of the people indicates that they are the women who constantly arouse devilish seduction in the ear of men specifically their husbands and penetrates any of their purpose in their minds to weaken their iron will in practising the righteous act. And what a great number of calamities did not these kinds of women created by their satanic temptation? What a great fires that are not ignited by them?
Fakhr Razi said: the women to influence their love in the heart of their men and acquire their possession.
These meanings in our period are more evident than any other period. As the most important tool of the spies is to influence the hearts of the politicians of the world by the use of the women spies with their naffasat e fil uqad
These women open the locks of the secrets and got the information of the most perplexing mysteries and pass it over to the enemy.
Some defined the naffasat as the evil living being or their groups who create satanic temptations with their endless propaganda loosen the knots of decisions.
It may have more compact and general meaning which even includes the words of the gossipers and informer decline the bonds of love between the people in the societies.
Then again it should be careful beside the previous mentioned occurrence of the sura e falaq (shan e nuzal). There are no other signs which mentioned the magic of magicians and for example if we define the ayat in such a manner it is not the proof of the correctness of that shane nuzal (occurrence of the sura). But it is only on the reason that the prophet peace be upon him was taking refuge from the evils of the magicians like the healthy people take protection from the disease of cancer though they are not suffering from it.
In the end of this sura it said: and from the evils of every envious person when he feels jealous.
This ayat illustrates that jealousy is the worst, ugliest and mean quality of man. Why the honourer Quran bring it in the row of the activities of the wild animal and the biting venomous serpents.
The points:
1- The most important source of evil, corruption , deterioration and decay
In the beginning of the sura the remarkable prophet of Islam peace be upon him instructed to take refuge in Sympathetic God from every evil creature. Then in defining it, indicates three types of sins.
The mischiefs of the invaders who take advantage in the sheer darkness of the night and attempt to attack.
By the harms of the satanic temptations with the aid of their evil remark, speech and propaganda that weakens the faith, confidence, love and the relationships of man.
And the troubles of envious people.
From these brief collections of explanations it is gathered that the most of the causes of evils and calamities are these three sources. And it is very much meaningful and noteworthy.
2- The Appropriateness of the ayaat
The interesting point is that in the first ayat of this sura instructs the prophet peace be upon him to take refuge in the Lord of the falaq (daybreak) from the vices of every malicious creature. The selection of the underneath term โbi rabbil falaqโ
is for the reason that the immoral creatures bring to an end the light and the ray of the guidance and security but the Lord of the falaq (day break) splits the darkness and obscurity.
3- The effect of the arrival of dawn
The point which is necessary to discuss is that the prophet peace be upon him is instructed to take refuge from the magic of magicians. It does not means that the prophet peace be upon him was under the spell of magic. But as if the prophet peace be upon him take refuge from every sin, fault and error too. That means by the help of the kindness of the Exalted Allah the man can get protected from the dangers.
On the other hand as we mentioned before we do not have any proof that the term below means the magicians only.
4- Evils of envious people!
Jealousy is the devilish habit which is created by the effect of the various factors like weakness in devotion, narrow mindedness and miserliness in the existence of man, in other words it means to wish for the end of the blessings.
Jealousy is the source of the most of major sins ( gunahan e kabira).
As it defines in the narrations, jealousy consumes the belief and devotion of man and destroys them away as the fire eats up the fuel.
As told by the imam Baqir alaihis salam: Jealousy eats up the belief and devotion of man as the fire eats up the fuel.
In another hadis by imam Jafar e Sadiq alaihis salam it states: the disaster of religion is Jealousy, to think oneself the greatest and to be proud of it.
It is for the reason that the jealous person, in fact is against the will of God that he thinks why the Benevolent God bestowed the blessings to a certain person? And showered his favours to them. As we read in the ayat 54 of sura e Nisa.
An-Nisa (The Women)
Or do they envy people for what Allah has given them of His bounty?
The consequences of the jealousy may reach to such degree that a person to abolish the blessing of the person whom he is feeling jealous, that person is ready to put an end to his existence to fulfill his doggedness. Therefore their example exists in the stories and the history.
In condemnation of the jealousy it is enough to mention that the first murder occurred in the world that was Qabeel who killed his brother Habeel because of the jealousy.
The jealous people were always been a hurdle in way of the prophets and the saints. Hence the noble Quran commands the prophet peace be upon him to seek refuge to the Merciful God, who is the source of commencement of day.
Though in this sura and the succeeding sura, the one who is addressed is the person of prophet but certainly the cause is to make a pattern and ideal and everybody should take refuge from the evils of the jealous people to the Guardian God.
O Protector God! We too take refuge to your holy entity from the evils of jealous people.
O Generous and Expander God! We plead to you to save us from being jealous to others.
O the Supreme Honourer! Save us from the evils of the blowers upon the knots and those who create satanic temptations.
Ameen! O God the Provider of the universe
