The Agricultural Units of the Astan Quds Razavi

Agriculture always comprise as one of the important sector of the economy which fulfills the basic and essential needs of the country. Expansion of the agriculture sector is the precondition for the economic development which results in the expansion and flourishment of the other sectors of the economy. For this important reason, Astan Quds Razavi after the victory of the glorious Islamic revolution has implemented many steps to expand its agricultural activities.
During last two decades the agricultural sector of this holy organization has expanded on a grand scale. At present the agricultural sector of the Astan Quds Razavi is considered as the pioneer in the modern agricultural field of the country. This sector possess good facilities of irrigational water, agricultural land, pastures and orchards endowed to this organization. It has utilized all these facilities to attain self-sufficiency and revive and develop the endowed agricultural properties.
In this field, Astan Quds Razavi has established many agricultural companies and organizations to expand the agricultural sector of the country by employing the agricultural sector of country by employing modern scientific methods and innovative techniques. By this way it has efficiently utilized the resources and created agro-industrial complexes with excellent planning. It was successful in reviving and developing the endowed agricultural properties and generating vast employment in this sector.
This is considered as one of the four primary activities of the economic organization of Astan Quds Razavi and one of the members of the board of directors of the organization, organizes the affairs of this group. The president of the group is Engineer Muhammad Ismail Afsarpanah, who is assisted by the directors of the headquarter, researches and experts to formulate and implement the practical decisions and planning for the units operating under their administration.
Likewise, this group in order to materialize their goals and programmes utilize the cooperation of the three specialized committees in agriculture, animal husbandry and gardening as well as the university and research centres of the Khorasan province and country.
Beside the technical affairs of the agriculture and animal husbandry, the decisions regarding the commercial and financial affairs, in particular imports, exports and services after their investigations and finalization in the board of directors of affiliated companies and organizations are implemented by this group. The president of this group is also the chief of the general assembly of all the units affiliated to it and is empowered with special powers.
Astan Quds Razavi in order to revive and develop the agricultural properties and holdings endowed to the holy shrine, is carrying out tremendous activities in the field of agriculture, forestry, gardening, animal husbandry, horticulture and agro based industries.

1. Astan Quds Agro-Industrial Experimental Farm
This extended unit covers an area of 7000 hectares which included arable lands, orchards, an animal husbandry and a big factory of dairy products. The obtained products of this cultivition unit are corns, grains, sugar, beetroots, summer crops, all sorts of fruits, sheep mutton, milk and tomatoes.
Astan Quds Agro-Industrial Experimental Farm is considered as the largest agricultural and animal husbandry firm in the country. It occupies an area of 7000 hectares and 71 deep wells are functioning in the farm. It is located 17 kilometers away on south-east of Mashhad on the Mashhad-Sarakhs highway and Tehran-Mashhad railway line. It is situated 985 meters above the sea-level. It was established 32 years ago and at present more than 800 experts and skilled labour are employed in this firm and they are endeavouring to attain the self-sufficiency and produce high quality product for export.
The activities of this farm is conducted in the fields of agriculture, gardening and animal husbandry. In order to increase the expertise and experience of the employees every year short-term specialized courses are conducted based on the educational needs of the firm.
This organization is administered by five members board of directors and its managing director is Engineer Ali Akbar Yousefi, who with the assistance of the experienced engineers and technicians in the fields of agriculture and animal husbandry conduct the programming and administration of the aforementioned fields.
The managing director of the farm is empowered with powers in the technical, production and commercial fields like imports and exports. Variety of products with international standards are produced in the farm to compete in the world markets. The managing director of the farm conducts negotiations and dealings with its customers throughout the world for the export of its products.
The Head of Agricultural Group of Astan Quds Razavi's Economic Organization , in an interview with our reporter, said : " Production of tomato has been increased to about 50 tonnes per hectare in the Agro-Industrial Intitition of the Experimental Farm ( Mazraeh Nemooneh )"
The chief of the Agricultural Group and a member of the Executive Board of the Economic Organization of Astan Quds Razavi , in an interview with our reporter ,said : " Production of tomato has been increased to 50 tonnes per hectare in the Experimental Farm of the Agro-Industrial Institution in this year . This amount was 42 tonnes per hectare in the last year .
Agricultural Activities
The agricultural department of the farm utilizes the most sophisticated systems and mechanized facilities. The sprinkle and drip irrigational methods are applied and fertilizers and pesticides are used to increase the yield on the 2600 hectares of agricultural land in quality and quantity.
Most of the products of this form are sold in the internal markets and are also exported to many countries. Important agricultural and gardening products of this farm are as follows:

In the field of orchard and gardening various types of fruits are produced in the 300 hectares of orchards like: apple, pear, plum, nectarine, apricot. The experimental farm every year sell its production in the plant basis and also by tenders.
Animal Husbandry Activities
The animal husbandry activities of the experimental farm is divided into two sections:
1. Cow-farming
2. Sheep-farming
The cow-farming of the farm is considered as the largest cow-farming in Iran. It is completely industrialized and mechanized and consists of three units of cow-farming which includes two dairy farms and one two- The cow-farming of the farm is considered as the largest cow-farming in year old female calves producing unit. This unit has the capacity of producing 700 female calves and 600 calves for producing meat.
The sheep-farming of the farm of the farm comprises of two units of fattened and stallfed sheep and goats. Its capacity is 25 herds of sheep and goats which partially fulfills the need of the red meat of the Khorasan province and provides the complete meat supply to the inn situated in the holy shrine of Imam Reza (A.S.). In this inn daily more than four thousand pilgrims and needy people are provided with meals.

Applied Research an Scientific Studies
This organization consists of a research and educational centre which utilizes advanced systems and computers in its studies. In this centre graduates and post-graduates in agricultural fields like farming, pedology, gardening, irrigation and animal husbandry are carrying out applied research and scientific studies in various research projects to increase the standard of the activities of the organization as well as bringing it to the required scientific and research criterion. About 40 research projects have been carried out till now with the cooperation of the universities and research centres in particular the Agriculture College of Ferdowsi University, Mashhad. These accomplished projects have been submitted to the agricultural organizations of Astan Quds Razavi and the universities and research centres. These projects have till now yielded very fruitful results.
Mr Afsarpanah – the chief of the Agricultural Group - , announced that applying Drop Irrigation system has been one of the most important factors of increasing the production level . He said : " The Drop Irrigation method was applied to about 21 hectares of lands of the tomato farms of the Eperimental Farm in the current year . Owing to the amount of w
ater economized through applying this method, it was decided to add 9 hectares to the lands under cultivation in this year" .
" The experimental plan of making optimum use of Drop Irrigation method , has been applied to the sugar-beet and melon farms of the Institution. In the case of obtaining positive results , the Drop Irrigation method will be applied to more extensive lands of the Farm" . He added .
The chief of the Agricultural Group of the Economic Organization of Astan Quds Razavi , emphasizing optimum use of water , said : " Like the other farmers , we also face up to the inadequacy of water resources. Therefore, we must endeavour to make optimum use of the available water , and increase the production level" .
Engineer Afsarpanah pointed to the water resources of the Farm include 70 deep wells with an output of about 19 litres per second each . He said : " The amount of water exploited from these wells , is about 1330 litres per second . Making use of this output , the Institution has cultivated about 2600 hectares of its lands for growing different crops . In the case of applying modern irrigation methods to the lands , we will be able to cultivate more extensive lands" .
According to the report issued by the General Office of the Public Relations of Astan Quds Razavi , Mr Afsarpanah conferring with oue reporter said :
" Accomplishing scientific researches is one of the most important steps taken by the Agro-Industrial Institution of the Experimental Farm ( Mazraeh Nemooneh ) to improve and develop the quantitative and qualitative aspects of the products . About 37 scientific researches have been carried out by the Institution during the past five years. The considerable results obtained from these researches , have been applied to the Experimental Farm , and the other agricultural institutions of Astan Quds Razavi . Furthermore . many of the farmers , gardeners , and animal husbandry owners apply our scientific methods " to their lands" .

2. Agro-Industrial Company, Sarakhs.
Sarakhs is considered as one of the important centres of agriculture and animal husbandry in the Khorasan province. About 90 per cent of the total area of the Sarakhs district belongs to Astan Quds Razavi and for this reason most of development and agricultural activities in the Sarakhs area is carried about by this company.
One of the important activities of this company is the establishment of the new pistachio gardens and maintaining the forestal pistachio production of the region. The activities of this company is centralized in agricultural, gardening and animal husbandry groups.
The managers and experts employed in the company render all forms of services, information and carry out commercial and economic dealings to supply their products in particular the high quality pistachio.
The board of director comprises of the three members and its managing director is Engineer Hamid Qasemi.

Animal Husbandry

The sheep-farming unit consists of more than 5000 heads of sheep.
This unit covers 113000 hectares of arable lands and 12 hectares of forests as well as 180 hectares of pistachio orchards. The main products of this agricultural corporation are corns, summer crops and pistachios.

3. Kenebist Agro-Industrial Company:
This Organization has been established in 1983 according to the policy of the Astan Quds Razavi to establish industrial animal husbandry farms and increase the cattle and agricultural production. This farm is situated 20 kilometers away from Mashhad and in the north-east direction of the city.
Beside the animal husbandry, agriculture is also carried out in this farm. The agricultural produce caters the fodder consumption of the cattle as well as sold in the markets. In this way the activities of this organization
can be divided into animal husbandry and agriculture. Recently prawn breeding farming is also inaugurated in this organization.
This organization is administered by three members board of directors and the executive affairs are the duty of the managing director. The present managing director of this organization is Engineering Mustafa Jamchi, who with the close cooperation of the specialists in the headquarter of the organization and universities as well as the research centres in carrying out plans and administration of the organization.
Animal Husbandry Activities
The animal husbandry activities of this organization is carried out in the five below-mentioned units:
1. Cow-farming
2. Sheep-farming
3. Trout fish breeding
4. Prawn breeding
Cow-farming
This organization comprises the first mechanized cow-farming in the Khorasan province and the firs exporter of hybrid female calves and bull calves to many countries.
Cow-farming of the organization consists of two units:
1. Dairy cows breeding unit
2. Hybrid calves breeding unit
Dairy Cows Breeding Unit
The installations and equipment's of this unit are spread in an area of eight hectares. It started its production activities in the year 1988 by buying some hybrid Helshetein Friesian Canadian cows. At present about 1600 cows are reared in this unit with the daily production of 15 tons of milk. Every year 120 tons of red meat is also produced by this unit.
Till now 223 female calves with their registered characteristics have been exported to various countries. This cow-farming unit is considered as one of the exemplary dairy cows breeding unit in Iran. In this unit new innovative methods and modern technology is applied like the transfer of embryo and other techniques. In 1997, this unit won the award of the "Exemplary cow-Farming Unit' of the Khorasan province. Every year more than 150 good stock female calves named Register are supplied by this unit.
Hybrid Calves Breeding Unit
The installations and equipment's of this unit are spread over an area of two hectares and is located two kilometers away from the dairy cows breeding unit. This unit has the capacity of producing more than 250 bull calves of hybrid quality. The bull calves of this unit are bought by the customers inside Iran and abroad to produce the hybrid industrialized cattle.
Sheep-farming
This unit consists of three herds of Moghani sheep which annually produces 20 tons of red meat. The total number of sheep reared in this unit is more than 2000 heads of sheep.
Poultry
This unit is established in an area of eight hectares and has the capacity to supply more than 300 tons of chicken meat to the markets. According to the formulated policy of this organization the poultry farming activities can be expanded based on the market demand.
Agricultural Activities
The agricultural activities of the organization are carried in two regions, one in Kanebist near Mashhad and the other in Aliabad, Neishabur.
1st) Kanebist Unit, Mashhad
The agricultural farming is carried out in an area of 6000 hectares with the facility of 23 deep wells and one subterranean canal system with the supply of 193.5 litres of useful water per second. The agricultural activities are carried out by direct administration, farming and leased basis and principal produce comprises wheat, barley and beetroot.
2nd) Aliabad Unit, Neishabur
The agricultural farming is carried out in this unit on an area of 300 hectares with the three deep wells and one subterranean canal system with total water supply of 81 litres per second. The chief products of this unit area wheat, barley and fodder-maize and sometimes pea, kidney bean, garlic and potatoes are grown. Since 1999 trout fish breeding is started in the warm water supplied through the subterranean canal system of the farm. On account of the hi9gh yield and efficient functioning of this trout fish breeding unit it has received the "Appreciation Tablet" from Fishing Organization of the Khorasan province.

4.The Agriculture and forest Development Organization of Astan Quds Razavi.
This organization was established in the year 1986 to develop and utilize parts of forests of the Mazandaran province in northern Iran. Since its establishment till now it has obtained excellent results.
Beside rendering services to develop and preserve the forests, this organization has produced non-fruit bearing tree saplings with flat and bristle leaves and saplings for the forest trees. The forest areas with acidity soil needs the replacement of the trees with bristle leaves with the trees with flat leaves and in this field also this organization renders very good services.

This organization also produces wood and charcoal products.

5. Malek Endowment Organization
A larger part of endowments in the holy city of Mashhad and some other towns of Khorasan province was endowed to the Astan Quds Razavi by late Haji Husain Malek. All these endowed properties are administered by Astan Quds Razavi through a separate organization called as Malek Endowment Organization. The bequeathed properties of this organization are active in four below mentioned sections:
1. Cultural activities which includes the Malek library and museum in Tehran.
2. Agricultural, animal husbandry and gardening activities in the holy city of Mashhad, Chenaran, Torbat-i Jam and Tehran.
3. Constructional, hygienic and services activities.
4. Medical treatment activities.
Malek endowment organization by possessing farms and orchards is considered as one of the important producers of agricultural, gardening and animal husbandry products.
The agricultural activities of this organization is carried out in Mashhad, Chenaran, Torbat-i Jam and Tehran. These activities are divided into three sections as follows:

In the gardening activity this organization obtained the "Exemplary Gardener Award" for the year 1999.

6. Agro-Industrial Company, Esfarayen
Agro-Industrial company, Esfarayen was established on the lands granted to it near the Ismailabad and Ishqabad villages near the Esfarayen city. From its inception it has regularly developed its facilities. This company has implemented advanced irrigational systems and had laid and regularly renovated the roads linking the farms which has resulted in the increased production.
Agro-Industrial Company, Esfarayen is active in agriculture, gardening and animal husbandry fields. The agricultural produce of this company is more than 4000 tons annually. Melon products are produced in large amount to obtain the melon products seeds in particular the water-melon seeds. Most of these products are exported abroad.

Agro-industrial company, Esfarayen is managed by three members board of directors and its managing director is Engineer Ahmadi.
The Activities of the Economic Organization: Agriculture:
This agricultural unit covers an area of 4500 hectares of arable lands, and has a large unit of animal husbandry in which thousands of sheep are being bred. The obtained products from this farm are corns, grains, alfalfas and sugar-beets.

7. The Agro-Industrial Company of Kashmar:
This agricultural unit covers an area of above 5000 hectares of arable lands, and there many pistachio and pomegranate orchards exist in that unit.
The main products of this extended farm are corns, grains, cotton and summer crops.

8. The Endowments Organization of Yazd and Kerman:
This organization carries out extensive and variegated activities. The most important activity of the organization is the agricultural activity, production of the different types of pistachio and citrus fruits.
The headquarter of this organization is located in Rafsanjan and its production units are situated in Yazd, Sirjan, Jiroft, Derman and Rafsanjan.
The pistachio products are produced mostly in Rafsanjan and Rawar and citrus fruits and dates are grown in Jiroft. This organization in order to increase the quality of its products maintains a very close contact with research and scientific centres in the country.
Gardening:
The gardening activity is mostly concerned with the production of variety of pistachio. The farming and the crop yield is completely mechanized and implemented by hygienic methods.
Pistachio is grown in two farms, one in Rafsanjan on an area of 483 hectares and the other in Rawar in a farm with an area of 750 hectares. Variety of pistachio produced in these farms are called as follows:

Beside pistachio the other products grown are:

The citrus fruits produced in these farms includes orange, sour orange and grape fruit. It is grown in the farms occupying an area of 90 hectares. The yield of citrus fruits from these gardens is very high and of good quality and taste.
Farming:
Most of the agricultural activity of the organization is concerned mainly with gardening. Beside it a limited farming activity is also carried out. The agricultural products of this organization are as follows:

The management of the organization is with the five members board of director and the executive affairs incharge is the managing director. The managing director of he organization is Agha Mahdi Wafi.
This institution covers an area of about 418 hectares of pistachio orchards, and there exist six libraries, three hopsitals and a number of educational units work under the supervision of this organization.
Some urban real states and pieces of arable lands also belong to this institution.

9. South Khorasan Endowments and Agriculture Organization
The centre of this organization is located in the Gunabad city (Khorasan Province) about 265 kilometres away from the holy city of Mashhad. Most of the orchards and the agricultural lands of this organization is situated in the slopes of the mountains in the Gunabad and Torbat-e Haidariyah regions.
The activities of this organization is composed of agriculture, gardening and animal husbandry. The gardening products of this organization are mostly exported.

The organization is managed by a three members board of directors and the managing director is the executive incharge of the organization. The managing director of the organization is Engineer Hasan Rafiee.
This organization has 93000 hectares of arable lands and orchards in the towns of Torbat Heydariya and Gonabad. The main agricultural products of this unit are corns, grains, sugar-beets and pistachios.

10. Orchards Organization Of Astan Quds Razavi
Orchards organization of Astan Quds Razavi is the largest producer of fruit in Iran and stands first in the country in cultivating the hybrid grafting sockets and fruit saplings.
This organization maintains 22 gardens in and around the holy city of Mashhad covering an area of 870 hectares. The gardens and orchards belonging to the Astan Quds Razavi comprise more than 50 per cent of green space of the holy city of Mashhad. This organization by implementing the modern scientific know-how has increased the yield of high quality fruits for export. Every year more than 7000 tons of fruits are produced by these orchards and supplied to the markets within the country and abroad.

Its worth mentioning the quality of fruits produced have their natural taste and fragrance and genetic studies are regularly carried out to improve the quality of the products.
Beside these orchards and gardens, this organization has also established 40 well equipped greenhouses and nurseries in the holy city of Mashhad and Mazandaran Province. It produces variety of apartment plants, herbs, seasonal and grafting branches of the plants. The products from these nurseries are sold within the country and also exported to many countries.
New High Quality Figures
One of the important programmes of this organization is to produce fruit bearing plants with short bases to increase the accumulation and yield. By this way uniformity is also obtained in the sizes of the trees. The implementation of this programme has created great changes in the orchards of Astan Quds Razavi and has also enhanced and greatly improved the quality and quantity of the fruit bearing trees. At present the organization is busy implementing a five-year plan to replace all the old trees with the new high quality fruit bearing plants with short bases and high accumulation and yield.
The plans to produce the hybrid bases for the apple tree with the M9, M26, M27, MM106, MM111 categories, the hybrid bases for pear tree with Q.A. category and the bases for the grafting the fruit trees producing fruits with kernel are under way in the orchards belonging to this organization. Every year more than one million highbrid grafted saplings are produced by the technicians of the organization to establish new orchards and also increase the quality of the existing orchards.
This organization is considered as pioneer in combating the pests in the fruit bearing trees by biological ways. It has produced trichograma bees to destroy the worms in the apples and has also produced organic fruit.
The orchards of the Astan Quds Razavi are famous among the orchards of Iran as the genetic treasures. The organization is administered by three members board of directors and managing director as its executive chief.
The managing director of this organization is Dr. Ghulam Husain Dawarinejad, and university professor who with the endeavours of the expert technicians of the organization administer these orchards. The organization also maintains close contacts with the universities to obtain the new scientific techniques and know-how.

11. Semnan Endowments and Agriculture Organization
One of the contributions of the holy system of the Islamic Republic of Iran is the cancellation of all those sale deeds documents of all the endowed and bequeathed properties. Before the victory of the Islamic revolution the evil imperial regime in Iran sold away many of the endowed and bequeathed properties. Many properties which were endowed in the Semnan province to the holy shrine of Imam Reza (A.S.) was sold by the former regime.
After the victory of the glorious Islamic revolution, Astan Quds Razavi cancelled the sale deeds of all those endowed properties which were sold. In the year 1981, it established an office in Semnan to regain all the lost endowed properties and lands. With the tireless efforts of the Semnan endowments organization till now m ore than 21256 hectares of land endowed to Astan Quds Razavi has been recovered in this province.
After the recovery of these agricultural lands many development projects have been implemented in these lands like digging eleven deep wells in the farms around the Baram and Lasjerd areas of the Semnan province, preparing 220 hectares of land in Damghan for the pistachio gardens, establishment of an animal husbandry with the capacity of more than 2000 heads of sheep and calves, reviving and putting into operation the Lasjerd farming, digging four deep wells, implementing the drip irrigational method in two farms around the Baram and Lasjerd areas of Semnan in an area of 280 hectares for the development of pistachio gardens and orchards.

12. Imam Reza (A.S.) Agricultural Complex in Rawar
Rawar is located in the semi-desert region of Kerman province and due to scanty water resources could not flourish. Astan Quds Razavi for the proper utilization of the lands and properties endowed to it started developmental activities in the region. In1987, it dug 12 deep wells in a barren area of 1000 hectares and created pistachio gardens on an area of 745 hectares. In the orchards land earthen dams have been created to harness the seasonal flood waters and 14 kilometers irrigational canal network made of concrete has been created in the area to supply water for the gardens.
This institution has1000 hectares of arable lands of which 715 hectares cover pistachio orchards. The pistachio is known to be the chief product of this unit, and it mostly grows in the desert region of Kerman.

13.Chinaran Endowments and Agriculture Organization
Chinaran endowments and agriculture organization is one of the agricultural production units of the economic organization of Astan Quds Razavi. It is located in the suburbs of Chinaran city about 60 kilometers away from the holy city of Mashhad in north Khorasan.

14.Qudsirian Pasture Development Company
Qudsiran pasture development company was established in 1986 with the participation of the Forest and Pasture Organization of Iran. It carries out various activities like developing and reviving the pastures, stabilizing the moving sands, creating watering places and reservoirs for rain water as well as other technical and engineering services. This company, for stabilizing the moving sands carries out special measures like sowing seeds and saplings and in this regard a great project is being implemented on an area of 243000 hectares. Afforestation is one of the goals and principal activity of this organization.
The three members board of director are the administrator of the company. The managing director of the company is Engineer Taqavi.

15.Agro-Industrial Company, Anabed
The agro-industrial company at Anabed is one of the agricultural units of the economic organization. It is situated units of the economic organization. It is situated 12 kilometers away from the Bardskan city in the Khorasan province.
This company is active in three fields of farming, gardening and animal husbandry.

This company was created in 1996 with the joint investment of three sugar industries of Astan Quds Razavi based in Chenaran, AabKooh and Torbat-e-Haidariyah to increase the production of beetroot and other agricultural products. Razavi Agriculture Company started its first activity on an area of 600 hectares in Daulatbad region of Sarakhs.
