Health and Medication
Compiled by: Syed Zainul Abideen, Tehran, Iran
1. The holy prophet Jesus (A.S.) was the best physician of his time. He used to cure diseases like vitiligo (leucoderma) and blindness and even revive the dead with God’s permission. This was regarded as his miracle. Had he studied medicine in any college? Nay! God is the tutor of His messengers and prophets. God revealed the knowledge of medicine to Jesus (A.S). It is said that in his childhood, Jesus used to suffer from diseases of old age and he used to ask his mother, Mary (A.S.) to prepare the medicines for him according to his prescription.
The holy prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.A.) and the holy Imams (A.S.) likewise acquired their knowledge of medicine from God .God has created every herb with effectiveness for curing different diseases. No prophet or Imam can perform his duty for spiritual development of mankind if he does not possess a healthy body.
Imam Ja’far al Sadiq (A.S) was the best teacher of knowledge in his time. Knowledge is of two kinds:
1- Knowledge of religion (or theology) and 2-Knowledge of body (or physiology), and every Imam possesses knowledge for health of both spirit and physical body.
Some Spiritual Cures
a. An invocation for any incurable disease, when doctors fail to cure a patient and they say: “No one but God can cure this disease”, Imam Sadiq (A.S) has narrated this invocation from the Holy Messenger (S.A. W.A.).
Saeed bin Abil Fath bin al Hassan al Qommi recovered from his incurable disease by recitation of this invocation four times immediately after the morning salaat. When the doctors were informed about this invocation some of them who were Jews examined the patient and found no trace of the disease; so they recited the ‘Kalima’ and embraced Islam. The invocation is as follows: (It should be recited in Arabic)
“Bismillah ir Rahman ir Rahim. ÈÓã Çááå ÇáÑÍãä ÇáÑÍیã
Alhamdo lillahe Rabbil a’lamin ÇáÍãÏ æ ááå ÑÈ ÇáÚÇáã
After recitation for forty times as indicated above wipe or rub the place of pain with your hand, the patient will recover. (Syed bin Tavoos, Nahjudda’wat) Bihar al-Anvar, V 95, p 65.
b). Surah tal Hamd Imam Sadiq (A.S) has said if Surah-e-Hamd is recited seven times (seventy times) by a person suffering from any disease he will definitely be cured. (Bihar ul Anvar v 95 p65)
Note: Recitation of invocation, Ayat or Surah of the holy Quran or Names of God are effective cures for those persons who are righteous and sincerely love God and His divine guides and obey God’s commandments and prohibitions.
c) Ismael, a son of Imam Sadiq (A.S) was severely ill and all his relatives and neighbors had no hope of his survival. Mother of Ismael struck by sorrow, came weeping and wailing and asked Imam Sadiq (A.S) to pray for her son.
Imam Sadiq (A.S) told her to perform ‘wuzu’ and two rak’at of salaat and to implore God in her prostration as follows: Allahumma anta wahabtahu li, va lam yako shai’an fahabho li hibatan jadidatan.
The mother complied with the Imam’s instructions and in the morning the child was cured and ate ‘harisa’ for his breakfast like a healthy person. (Makaarem ul Akhlaq p 454)
d). Imam Sadiq (A.S) has asked to recite as following: O the giver of good health & remover of illness……..… Send cure for the illness that has afflicted me. (For Arabic see Bihar ul Anvar v 95 p 75)
