The Status of Hadrat Abbas’s (A.S.) Hands

The love Amir al-Mu’minin (A.S.) held toward Hadrat Abbas (A.S.) was quite unique in comparison to his other children. It was from such a unique love that upon his last hours of life, when he put Imam Hassan (A.S.) in charge of his other children, he exceptionally asked Imam Hussain (A.S.) to take care of Hadrat Abbas (A.S.).
Regarding the love of Amir al-Mu’minin (A.S.) for Hadrat Abbas (A.S.), it is sufficient to say that upon his birth, Umm al-Banin (A.S.) (the mother of Hadrat Abbas (A.S.)) brought him to Amir al-Mu’minin (A.S.) asking him to choose a name for the newborn. Amir al-Mu’minin (A.S.) recited the Adhan in his right ear and the Iqama in his left ear, and then asked Umm al-Banin (A.S.): “What do you want to name him?”
Umm al-Banin (A.S.) replied: “I have never preceded you in anything”.
Amir al-Mu’minin (A.S.) said: “I will name him as my uncle’s name, Abbas”. Upon that he took Hadrat Abbas’s (A.S.) hands out of the swaddling cloth, kissed them, started crying, and said: “It is as if I can see these two hands near the river of Furat, cut from the body on Yawm al-Taf, in the way of supporting his brother Hussain." (1)
Imam Sajjad (A.S.) has narrated: “May Allah bless my uncle Abbas; the one who preferred his brother over himself and sacrificed his esteemed life for him, to the extent that his hands were cut in the way of supporting his brother. In return for his hands, Allah will award two wings to him to fly with the angles. On the Day of Judgment, the status of Abbas is so high that all the martyrs will wish to have his status."
