Institute for Research on Russia, Central Asia and Caucasus (IRAS)
IRAS (Institute for Research on Russia, Central Asia and Caucasus) is the first and only research non-governmental organization (NGO) in Iran which studies cultural, political, economic and social matters of Russia, Central Asia and Caucasus. The institute has started its activities formally since 2004.
Structurally, IRAS has board of trustees, board of directors (members of the board, head of the board and managing director) and research and executive under-secretaries, and translation, research and support sections. It is mentionable that Dr. Mehdi Sanaie is the head of the board of directors and managing director of the institute.
Aims:
- Enhancing the knowledge of the Iranian and regional elites and people about each other;
- Development of scientific and research interactions with scientific and academic institutions of the region in order to more proximity and relations;
- Extending the cultural and civilizational relations among Iran and the countries of Central Asia, Caucasus and Russia;
- Training expert researchers in the filed of the regional matters;
Subject of Activities:
- Generally, the subject of IRAS activities is cultural research and it enjoys a vast scope whose most significant ones are:
1. Accomplishment of strategic and applied research in the issues relevant to the aims of the institute (such as cultural, social, political and international studies, Iranian studies…);
2. Translating, compiling and publishing books, texts and articles in the Russian, English and Persian languages;
3. Providing consulting services to the governmental and non-governmental institutions and organizations;
4. Participation in the research projects with the similar research institutes in the country and abroad;
5. Holding scientific sessions, seminars and conferences.
Facilities:
- Active and much-viewing website (www.iras.ir) in three languages (Russian, English and Persian). The website was previously updated weekly but now it has become a news- analytical and academic website and serves as the first regional information base with a cultural trend which covers the news daily.
-In addition to news and analysis section, this website has other sections such as "Iranology", "articles and reports bank", etc which are published in Iran and abroad. IRAS website is a source for newspapers, periodicals, news websites and famous news agencies in Iran.
- Specialized library about the region with more than 3000 books in three languages (Russian, English and Persian) that the oldness of some of the Russian books is more than 200 years.
- Information mine full of articles, Bulletins, journals, periodicals, quarterlies, dissertations and accounts concerning the region which are published in Iran and abroad.
- Film and instructive tapes archive.
- Scientific board that are of the most salient scientific elites of the country. Some of the members of scientific board are as follows:

Scientific, Research and Publication Activities:
- The investigation of “The Comprehensive Plan of Russia (political, economic, cultural, social, industrial conditions and communication technologies etc) in 2700 pages.
- Investigation of "Iran-Russian relations"
- Investigation of "Iran- Armenian relations"
- Publication of the analytical periodical "IRAS" in the form of bulletin for decision-makers' use about the region. This periodical has been published regularly as a monthly one since June 2005.
- Publication of the quarterly "Iran-Slaw" in Persian language in Russia which has audiences in all of the region in the filed of culture, language and Persian literature and Iranian civilization
- Investigation of "Encyclopedia of Central Asia" (under way)
- Preparation for compilation and publication of the book "Fifteen Years of Iran-Russian Relations" (from cultural, political, economic, military and pathological aspects) for the fifteen anniversary of the formation of Russian Federation
-Translation and publication of the book "Russian Foreign Policy: Self –consciousness and National Interests" by the great Russian author A,G. Zadokhin from Russian to Persian.
- Translation and publication of the book "Russia in Search of Its Identity" by: John Billington, (2004)
- Publication of the scientific- research quarterly “IRAS” with an international influence
- Holding international seminar of “Central Asia: past, present and future”, in cooperation with Tehran University;
-Holding scientific session of “Exploring the Situation of Russian Language
Teaching in Iran and Persian Language Teaching in Russia” with attending
prominent professors;
-Holding periodical sessions with Farsi students of the region;
- Holding scientific session with Iranologists of the region;
-Participation of the Managing director and other professors of the institute in the international seminars about the region in Russia, Kazakhstan, the US etc.
- Providing scientific consulting to the governmental and non-governmental institutions and organizations.
