On 14th of the Islamic month of Rabi as-Sani in 1023 AH, Allah-Verdi Khan, one of the experienced and highly successful commanders of Shah Abbas the Great of the Safavid dynasty of Iran, passed away. He was originally a Christian from Georgia who came to Iran at a young age and converted to Islam while serving Shah Tahmasb.
Due to his hard work and merit, he was appointed as governor of Fars Province in 1004 AH, and liberated Bahrain. He loyally served the Safavid government, carrying out valuable social and welfare activities, including the construction of the famous “Si-o-Se Pol” or the 33-arches Allah-Verdi Khan Bridge over Zayanderoud River in Isfahan, which is one of the most beautiful historical monuments of the world.
His son was the equally famous Imam Quli Khan, who loyally served the Safavids, and mounted expeditions in the Persian Gulf to defeat and drive out the Portuguese intruders.
