Iran National Library

It was officially inaugurated in 1937 Prior to this date other libraries existed that performed the same function informally, the first of them being the Library of Dar al-fonun College inaugurated in 1851. In 1899 adjacent to the library of Dar al-fonun, another library called the Nation's Library came into existence. Eight years later the two libraries were merged into one under the name of the Public Library of Ma'aref and opened to the users .In accordance with the policy, and aiming at organizing the libraries throughout the country, the Iran National Library has undertaken the following technical and administrative services;
- To provide and publish the information storage and retrieval devices and sources such as; National Bibliography, the classification expansions, the authority files for names, organizations and publishers, subject headings, library standards, cataloging rules, and Persian thesauri.
- To prepare the catalog cards to be sold to the applicants
- To perform general and specialized educational courses in library science
- To make relationship with different libraries throughout or outside the country, focusing on the exchange and gift services

Amir Kabir University Central Library
The central library of Amir Kabir University in Tehran was established in 1337, offered a limited number of books to the public.
Its major activity started in 1340 when the collection of books was increased using the classified standard book methods. In 1365 by using the developed bookkeeping software, the bibliography of information sources were entered into a main computer system. In 1373, the development of the software was completed and book keeping took an important step to mechanize library services.
Currently, all the available information sources of the library are saved and researchable in a computer database of books. This central library is managed by an open system and the books are classified by the congress method.

Purpose
The major purpose of the library and scientific documents center of Amir Kabir University is to provide researching capabilities and meet the educational demands of professors and students of the university. Another purpose of the library is to provide the information services to other individuals who are part of other educational and research institutions around the country. The library and scientific documents center consists of two parts, the central library and fifteen relatives libraries as follows in table 1 and the information center.

Producing, gathering, preparing, saving and
researching the sources which are based on research and study demands of the university is the job of the C.L.
For access by researchers and students outside of the university, some special regulations are in place so that commander can use the sources of library at place or rental.
At present in C.L, the process of giving books is in a mechanized way by using the barcode system. The number of C.L members has been mentioned in table 3. Table 3: Library members statistics

Information center
In order to improve the education and research
purposes of the university and to provide for the information demands of students and researchers, the process is becoming simpler to use and is has increased in efficiency. The library information sites on library software or information banks in CD_ROM cases have been established and the actions have been done as follows:
1. Installing PAYAM e MASHREGH (Version 1) in 1377, using the copy of the information banks on Hard Tower by Windows NT by NetBEUI protocol on the local net of the university.
2. Installing the distributed information system of
library (DLIS) called BISTOON. This software can provide us access to all the information banks in abstract, including the complete text and the whole image. The client/server structure allows this by putting the search engine in the shape of a server based system which can be used via the Internet or Intranet.
The abilities of mentioned system are:
a. Monotonous searching on banks which have different structures.
b. Having web based system which access the
information by Internet.
c. Using the accounting system.
d. The possibility to use information bank articles
(full text in PDF format) online.
e. The system which is modular, allows the development of the system by buying another system. Without any changes to the existing system, we can add to other systems.
f. Being redundant means that if one system does not work, other systems will continue to work.
g. Each system can have about 90 to 100 CDs.
3. As the library take steps to develop its information sources, it takes conclusion of agreements cooperation with other information centers and libraries and membership in information nets. Giving information services by avilable information sites in other libraries and information centers inside the country is mentioned as follows:
ROSE NET (Information BBS). Communication with this net is leased-line. Searching information in information sites in the country and also communication with information banks outside the country is possible by this system.

4. Article Order
Library is able to provide required articles, reports , conference articles and books for students and HEYATE ELMI members , via connection with all
libraries around the country. In case the needed articles for M.D. and Ph.D
students or HEYATE ELMI members are not found within country databases, library applies for them from Britain Library via Email.
